Tayrona Park ~ October 8, 2016

Wow what a super fast but super legit week! Everything is awesome! Everything is cool when you're part of a team!..... Moving on....

This week went super de duper fast. Like all the other ones haha. This week we had leaders council again. But this time, instead of here in Barranquilla like it has always been, we went to Santa Marta! The REAL coast of Colombia! Santa Marta is really small compared to Barranquilla and it was my first time going so that was fun. It is small but very beautiful. Everything is super green and luscious there! It's kind of cool because it's like a little valley where the city is surrounded by mountains on three sides and then the beach on one. As you enter the city you come down a pass that's like in North Ogden and you see all the big buildings and stuff in the middle of basically jungle covered mountains. Anyways, we had the council in the Manzanares (Apple Orchards) chapel. (It is a beautiful church, probably the most beautiful one I've seen here so far, but it's really small. And it is where my companion, Elder Pucha, was serving before coming here to the office, so he felt at home.) In the council, President trained about the Book of Mormon and how we all need to really STUDY it more. Not just read from front to back lots of times, instead really finding scriptures to themes and marking them and writing them down in a journal to remember them. He taught that we really need to know what is contained in the Book of Mormon and we talked about the structure of the book, like the four plates it contains, which ones contain which books, by whom it was written and compiled. It was really cool how he explained it to us. Later the assistants taught about finding people. We watched the mormon message about the man searching for gold and compared it to the mission in how we need to use all the methods and ways we can to always be finding tons and tons of people to teach to really be able to find the ones that are prepared in this time. God has already prepared the field, all we must do is harvest it. It was legit.

Now, the next totally legit part. We went to Parque Tayrona!!! Or Tayrona Park in English haha. It's like an hour drive from Santa Marta. We went yesterday and changed our pday to yesterday as well to do it. We went with President and his family and WOW it was SOOOO beautiful! Oh I felt like a scout again going on high adventures! But this time, in what I consider the real life untamed wilderness haha! Literally we were in a jungle. Literally. Legitimately. You'll see in the fotos. (Fotos is so much easier to write than photos. That's why I write it that way haha). Anyways, it was like an hour and a half to two hour hike through HUMID jungle and passing by beautiful beaches with super blue water! There were a lot of creepy creatures we saw in the path and we even saw little zaboomafoos! (Is that how you spell it?) Ooooh there was even a guy that left the park right after us that saw a cayman (aligator) in this little lake pond spot that we had passed not too long before him! He showed us pictures and it was HUGE! And cool! Sebastian (President's son) and I actually did see the water moving in that little pond as we were passing but we never saw anything. Pretty creepy. We even saw tons of ENORMOUS beehives hanging from trees. I think the people that work in the national park go through smoking them out or something because we never saw any bees in them. So that was good because we were scared. In the last beach we walked to we played soccer in the sand. I will just tell you that the sand is super heavy and it looked like we were all running and playing in slow motion! Ooo and the sand hurt your ankles when someone kicked you. My ankles are a little scraped. Not too bad... It was really fun though. If I come back to Colombia after the mission I might go again to Parque Tayrona.

So yeah, that's practically my week! We'll see how things go this next week! It's already week 5 of 6 in this transfer! That means my fourth transfer here is already ending. Time is slithering right on by. Keep on studying the Book of Mormon and the new Conference talks! They are the inspired words of prophets that will guide us in whatever circumstance we are in. I know that God loves and protects us in all things. He shows us our weaknesses to make us strong and to help us reach our full potential. Remember who you are and where you come from and where you're going. I love you all so much!

¡Paz fuera!

Love,
~Élder Tyler Hales~

Yeah the view was so beautiful! Haha I don't think i've grown at all in the mission. Maybe my face and cheeks in width wise but other than that... nothing.

Tayrona park is really beautiful. It would be fun to go but you ohave to be really careful. It would scare me to go with the family I think. It was awesome though because it reminded me so much about Jurassic Park! It looked exactly like it! The trees and mountains and everything! I was always saying like "imagine if a trex just came out from behind those trees or rocks." It was legit. There is one fotos in particular that reminds me of it. Its the one with the single jungle mountain in the background with the palm trees in very front. Ooh it was a cool atmosphere. But scary at the same time.

haha Yeah (President Gallego) he is really young. But he is really awesome!

Um, do you know how much I have in my checking account? have you been able to transfer any over? Just because I'm thinking of buying the new set of scriptures because mine our outdated.

Thank you so much! I love you too! Sorry I was on the phone with Sister Gallego for the past five minutes.

Oh! We even saw some indians that live up in the mountains there and stuff. They hardly speak spanish. It was pretty interesting.

OK got to go now! Love you so much! Say hi to everyone! It's so hard to write everyone.... I just wrote my weekly, you, pops, and gracie. Tell everyone else I love them too!

General Conference ~ October 2, 2016

Buenos días mi querida familia.

Les informo que no voy a escribir hoy en la tarde, ya que es la Conferencia General. :D Mañana como a las 6 o 7 de la tarde, tiempo de Colombia, podré escribirles. Asi que prepárense para mañana! ;)

Les amo mucho! Cuídense y hablamos pronto!

Good afternoon everyone!!! What a spiritual explosion in these two days and wow how fast they went by!

This week has been great. A lot has happened, but nothing really outstanding like Conference. This week I just helped prepare the emergency backpacks to send out to all the missionaries. It was alright. We also have been helping an investigator and his son prepare for baptism and well the sisters in our district have actually been teaching them mostly, we just helped set up the interview and stuff with the zone leaders. Well, the investigator passed the interviews and well on friday Elder Pucha and I went to teach him and his son to help them prepare for their baptism for this next saturday because yesterday was conference. The investigator has a catheter and so he has been saying that he can't be baptized by immersion and so we have been talking to him about John Tanner and lots of things to help him overcome that fear. And well on friday basically the investigator closed up and said he will not be baptized by immersion. He began to tell us that the church needs to be reformist and change things to adapt to the new world. He said that he wants to be baptized with water on his head... Long story short, he began sharing all his doubts about the church and Joseph Smith and everything and we tried and tried to help him but he wouldn't let us share so we practically had to leave... Honestly we don't know how to help him, but we will keep praying and trying to help him really feel and not just understand that these things are true. I know that these things are true and that if one truly has the desire to know and feel, God will give them that answer they need to become converted to Christ, not just to a church.

Anyways, on a happier note! CONFERENCE!!!!! Was LEGIT! :D

OH how I love conference and the Spirit that is felt every session and during all these two days. There were many talks that I loved, but some of them that really stood out to me were by Robert D. Hales on how "If I loved you more, would you hurt less?" and "If we loved the Savior more, would we suffer less?" Then I really loved the talk by President Eyring in the Priesthood Session about showing our confidence in the growing priesthood youth and then by Elder K. Brett Nattress and the story of his mother and "Notwithstanding my imperfections, I was worth saving." and then lastly the talk by Elder Dale G. Renlund about Repentance. I really loved all of the talks, but those ones really hit me and made me ponder a lot of things.

Something that really stood out to me from all the conference is that thought about how it doesn't matter all of our imperfections and mistakes we have made, we are always worth saving. We have our families, those around us, and most especially our God and our Savior who love us so much and will always do all they can to save us.

Well that is all for now! Here's a foto for how we may all be feeling, like how Elder Holland shared last time. ;)

Hasta lueguito!

Hahaha that's funny. Yeah I sent it in Spanish to see if you guys could figure it out. ;) I was hoping you got it too because when I checked my emails later and I saw yours saying that maybe you missed me I felt bad. But yup! Everything is well!

Wow Conference was sooooooo awesome! I loved it so much! Yet I am really sad that it is over again.... It goes by so fast. too fast. Haha I got to watch it in English actually and that was awesome! And yeah I was able to point out Sister Wood and Brother Wood, but I didn't see Leigh. Conference always makes me a little thinking about homish. But wow it was awesome! I'm sure you loved the story by Elder Nattress about the mom. I'm sure you cried in it too haha. ;) Because I did, and I thought that that is probably what you thought and had put that goal about me when I was at home. ;) ;) haha.

Tell Jesse that I love him so much and that I await his first email from the MTC. I have been super excited for him to get out there and work hard. Tell him he'll be great. Tell Diane happy birthday for me as well! And uncle Wil! And all the others when they have birthdays this month.

EVerything will be ok with your surgery on Tuesday. Don't worry. I will be praying for you. Just take care of it properly and it should heal up properly.

Oh yeah! ABout Elder Jorgensen! I have been meaning to ask you about that in these weeks but I keep forgetting. His name is Kayden Jorgensen and he lives in Willard and I believe he is attending the YSa ward where Matt and Bryce went. That would be good to get a hold of him to give you guys that stuff. It's not a lot, but it would be nice so he doesn't forget.

Well tell Dad that everything will be ok and that he shouldn't stress. Things will always be alright.

Well I love you so much! If you have more questions you can ask me! Love you! See you love you bye!

Healthier and Happier Changes ~ September 24, 2016

¡Buenas tardes a todos!

Well, this is week of month 13 already. As I say every time, I truly can’t believe how fast time has been flying by.

This week has been a great one. Honestly it was a little more tranquilo. Not very many missionaries have called so that is good. That means the mission is a lot healthier and happier! J Actually it has been interesting to see because ever since President and Sister Gallego said that all missionaries need a dinner contract, the number of missionaries sick has lessened a ton. If we were to put it in a graph it would be like this:

It is pretty awesome. We’ll see how things keep going in time.

This week we also had an awesome opportunity to have Zone Conference with Elder Falabella from the Area Presidency. It was a great experience. He shared about how we first need to be converted as missionaries to be able to help others convert themselves to the Gospel. He then shared about our dedication and how it says in Abraham that we will be tested to see if we “will do all things whatsoever the Lord [our] God shall command [us];” During all of the conference we focused everything on the talk by Elder Oaks, “Good, Better, Best” and in what things we as missionaries must do to become not just good nor better, but the best missionaries that we can be. Every little thing we do we must think about if it is really the best thing we could be doing in that moment. I was able to reflect a lot on that.

Well this next weekend is already Conference!! It will be so legit! It will be another great moment to receive some powerful inspiration from the prophets.

I know this Church is true. I know God has called a prophet to lead and guide us by revelation. I know that the young boy Joseph Smith saw God and His Son and was given the power to restore His church on the earth. And most of all, I know that Christ lives. He is our savior and the perfect example for all. May we show that love He has for whatever person we may meet.

I love you all.

Love,

~Élder Tyler Hales~

Hi Mommoo!
Well, to answer your questions first. Things in the mission are going well. I am learning a lot and well hoping to apply it all. There is a lot to learn and a lot to apply, and it doesn’t all come at once. About the packet, well it’s like a packet with some missionary study books called “The First Twelve Weeks”, or in other words the training when you arrive at the mission, Adapt to Missionary Life, a book about how to deal with the stress of the mission, and other things like mosquito repellent, hand sanitizer, thermometer, dictionary, etc. The medication names… Yes? I have learned a ton. A lot are similar as in English, they just end in –a or –o like for example, Amoxicillin is amoxicilina in Spanish, or Naproxen is Naproxeno in Spanish. But there are some that are a little different. Honestly I haven’t really learned a whole lot about medicine and all that stuff. Just basic stuff for common pains, sicknesses like the flu and stuff like that. I communicate with Sister Gallego and the area doctor when there is something that I don’t know.

About the 20 thing… Yeah just this week I started to think about that and I realized that it’s already my last birthday in the mission… and I’ll be 20. It is pretty crazy. Time is going really fast.

How is Emma Jemma doing? And Bryce? And your toe? All this week I have been a little worried about that. I have been praying for you all.

Well, yeah I think that’s about it. Just got to keep pushing right along. I’m glad you guys were able to go to support Kim and the family. Oh yeah and I am totally so excited for Conference this next week! I can’t believe it’s already here again! Oh it’s going to be legit!

Well I will be going now. See you, Love you, Bye! :D

Ooooohhhh....... You probably shouldn't have told me that. (Mommoo's Toe) That made me a little nauseous haha. I will be praying for that then as well.
That's good about Emma. I hope she keeps getting better.
Tell Bryce to not faint while he's on that table thingie. That would be bad. ;) But yes, we will figure him out one day.
Oh I forgot to tell you guys, in this leaders council it was decided that we can only listen to Hymns from Motab and the original recorded hymns from the church site. So that means no Marshall Mcdonald or any other artists... but oh well. Just as Nefi said, if it's been commanded, we must obey. I will go and do. So the music Usb won't be needed now.

And yeah, it's ok. I will be obedient.
My health... it's good. Lately my appetite has been mas o menos. My weight is still about the same. I haven't really lost or gained any in these past couple of weeks. I just think it's strange that I'm not gaining from all I'm eating and the time that I'm sitting in the office. Everyone else gains a lot, but me.... nothing.
We'll see how things go.

Hahaha we almost watched that movie (The Good Dinosaur) a few weeks ago. But now we can't watch movies in the mission either... So when I get home we'll have to watch it.

Well take care of the family. Say hi to everyone! I love you all so much! I hope the salsa is yummy. Until the next time! Ciao!
